How to Select Lumber for a Deck | Better Homes & Gardens

Redwood cedar and cypress as well as the exotic species are good choices but since most decking boards from domestic woods are sapwood and not rot resistant you should treat them. For the deck surface you can use 2x4s 2x6s or 5/4x6s.

5/4 x 6 or 2 x 6 PT Decking what would you choose? | DIY

As you already stated the 5/4" material is a higher grade wood. It is a higher grade wood because it's used as a finished decking material. The 2x6 material is used as structural framing members and need not be as pretty and it isn't. In a traditional 16" deck framing scenario either material is structurally applicable.

OT - Composite material or pressure treated wood for deck?

I wish it was that cheap. Built my 6th deck last year on previous decks I used pressure treated 5/4 then treated 2X6 5/4 cedar on one and 2X6 redwood. My son owns the house now with the 2X6 redwood decking and it looks great yet 35 years old. Other ones not so good.

2x6 or 5/4 for deck boards? | Green Tractor Talk

My front deck (480 sq) has 2x6 decking and the rear deck (300 sq) has 5/4 decking both 16" on center. You will get most of any bounce on a deck from the span/size of the joists not the decking so one up your joists for a sturdy deck. Quality wise I prefer the 5/4 decking. It doesn't seem to check as easily as the 2x.

new deck for trailer; just use pressure treated wood? | NC4x4

Yeah you can just pressure treated wood. That will work fine. You can also use redwood or rough cut sawmill wood. Both will last quite a while. Just depends on how much you want to spend. I'd put the screws back in. They will keep the boards from warping and rattling. Go back with 2x6 or 2x8. I'd stay away from the 2x12 (personal experience).

1X stock is fine if you have 16 inch on center joists and the joists are themselves sized properly. Using 2X stock over undersized joists does help make the deck feel more solid. If you have 24 OC joists I'd definitely stay with the 2X decking.

yup #1 5/4 PT with the correct side up (bark side up) and SS screws is the best way to go IMO if you don't like composite materials or can't afford it.. If the decking is upside down the SS screws will pop and you will not be a happy person during winter months when the curl and screw heads gouge the crap out of your shovel if you do indeed
